Cameron Ciraldo REJECTS Tigers, with Panthers assistant coach ‘unable to accept’ job in crushing blow to NRL fighters

  • Cameron Ciraldo has turned down the chance to take over for the Tigers
  • Wests had identified the Panthers assistant coach as the ideal candidate for the job
  • Tigers fired Michael Maguire earlier this month after a bleak form
  • Interim coach Brett Kimmorley has lost both games he led
  • Ciraldo still in the running for the Bulldogs job, but not keen on the Warriors

The Wests Tigers’ search for a new permanent coach has dealt a crushing blow, with Cameron Ciraldo turning down the chance to take over the NRL fighters.

The Tigers had hoped to name Penrith’s highly regarded assistant coach as Michael Maguire’s replacement, but their offer was not turned down.

In a statement released Saturday, Wests said Ciraldo had written to them directly to inform them that “he is not in a position to accept the role at this point in his career.”

The club added: “Although disappointing, we respect his decision and will continue the selection process for the appointment of our club’s head coach.”

Maguire was sacked earlier this month after Wests lost nine of their first 12 games this season and failed to make the finals in each of Maguire’s three campaigns in charge.

Former New South Wales halfback Brett Kimmorley was named interim coach but lost both of his first two games in charge, with the Tigers finishing in 14th place on the ladder.

Ciraldo met with West football chief Tim Sheen this month and chairman Lee Hagipantelis, and Fox Sports reported being given a tour of the club’s soon-to-open Center of Excellence in Concord.

Ciraldo, one of the most thoughtful assistant coaches in the NRL, seemed a perfect fit for the “development coach” the club said Sheen needed.

“We are looking for a development coach,” he said after Maguire’s departure.

‘Someone who is willing to give our young people opportunities. He will have to be patient.

The Bulldogs are also interested in Ciraldo as they want to appoint a permanent coach instead of Mick Potter, who has been in charge on an interim basis since last month.

‘It will not be an easy solution tomorrow. […] We now have great trails. We are determined to make a fist of it. It will take some time, but I’m not saying it will take three years to see results.’

The Bulldogs remain in the running for Ciraldo, while Canterbury is still looking for a replacement for Trent Barrett, who ran away from Belmore last month.

The Warriors are also looking for a new permanent coach after parting ways with Nathan Brown earlier in June, but the Panthers assistant would not be interested in the role.
