England now has to beat Croatia on Wednesday and hope that Portugal beats Switzerland for any chance of progressing from Group D.

If the young Lions and Portugal both win, it boils down to a head-to-head battle between England, Croatia and Switzerland for one place. Such an occurrence is likely to be resolved by goal difference.

Hudson-Odoi started England’s first game, but was unavailable for the second game after suffering a shoulder injury.

English boss Aidy Boothroyd stressed the importance of the 20-year-old for their defeat against Portugal.

“We need Callum. We need them all. We have 23 excellent players, but only 11 places, ”said Boothroyd.
