German midfielder Toni Kroos has confirmed through social media that he will come out of international retirement ahead of this summer’s Euro Cup.

The 34-year-old last played for the national team in the 2-0 loss to England in the round of 16 of Euro 2020.

The Real Madrid star announced his retirement following the defeat at Wembley, but appears to have now changed his mind after revealing his return via Instagram.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann had previously stated that he was open to Kroos returning to the international set-up, and it appears the prospect of a home Euro 2024 campaign has caught his eye.

In an Instagram post, Kroos said: “Guys, quickly and painlessly: from March I will play for Germany again.”

Kroos continued: ‘Why? Because the coach of the national team asked me to, because I want to and because I am sure that there are more things possible with the team in the Euro Cup than most people believe at this moment.”

The midfielder wore the Germany shirt a total of 106 times before announcing his retirement.

He played a starring role in the 2014 World Cup-winning team, scoring twice in their historic 7-1 semi-final victory over Brazil.

In December, Nagelsmann, who became Germany coach in September 2023, showed his admiration for the national team legend.

‘Toni is a great person who says his opinion clearly and a very successful footballer. You can talk to him about everything,’ he said.

Nagelsmann added that they “hadn’t talked concretely” about Kroos returning to the fold, but it seems that everything that was discussed has worked.

Euro 2024 will host matches in 10 German cities. It begins on June 14 before ending on July 14 with the final in Berlin.

While Germany will be hoping for a final they will be a part of, their recent history in international competition is not good. In both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups they were eliminated in the group stage.

Kroos’ first games with the squad will be during the March international break, where he will play against France and the Netherlands in March.
