California has declared a state of emergency over bird flu as the disease threatens to become a pandemic.
It comes hours after the CDC revealed that a person in Louisiana had been hospitalized for the first time with a serious case of bird flu.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced the order today, saying the state of emergency was intended to “streamline and expedite” the state’s response to bird flu.
California has recorded just over half of the 61 cases of bird flu detected in the US so far, with 33 of the 61 infections recorded, mostly among dairy farm workers.
Wastewater monitoring in the state now also shows that the bird flu virus is being detected routinely.
