A California lawyer and Bible study teacher was criticized for blaming sex addiction when he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for molesting six girls, the youngest of whom was just five.

Convicted child molester Steven Matlak, 44, apologized in court to the victim’s families on Monday, provoking anger after accusing his crimes of coercion to sex.

“I abused the trust you had in me and manipulated and abused it in the worst way, I am so sorry for what I did to you and your families,” Matlak told the families of his victims.

“You were kind and nice to me and I paid it back by stabbing you in the back.”

However, the girls’ parents criticized Matlak for his “sex addiction” statement, calling him nothing more than “a gross old man” and a pedophile.

“Forty years won’t mend the damage of innocent little girls who may have to navigate every romantic relationship through the broken lens of being attacked by a gross old man,” said the victim’s mother.

“I abused the trust you had in me and manipulated and abused it in the worst way, I’m so sorry for what I did to you and your families,” Matlak told the victim’s families.

Matlak, who last month pleaded guilty to seven felonies as part of a plea deal, was arrested twice in 2017 after targeting young girls enrolled in a Bible study class he taught at his home.

The girls’ families were part of the First Presbyterian Church in Fresno, where Matlak lived with his wife and young daughter. His wife filed for divorce in 2017 after the allegations came to light, according to a California civil lawsuit records.

All of Matlak’s victims also knew his daughter, detectives told the… Fresno Bee, where the predator uses that relationship to take advantage of its victims.

“I lied to you, manipulated situations and used free moments to commit my crimes,” the convicted child molester told the victim’s families in court on Monday.

“My actions were extremely bad and terrible. I’m so sorry I did all this.’

The father of two victims said the damage Matlak has done is irreparable, and says his daughters saw counsel to resolve the aftermath of Matlak’s actions, which he says has left them anxious and suspicious.

“I lied to you, manipulated situations and used free moments to commit my crimes,” the convicted child molester told the victim’s families in court on Monday.

“I bought new security doors and cameras to make my daughters feel much safer in our home,” said one father, according to the Fresno Bee.

“I don’t trust anyone with the responsibility of looking after or looking after my children anymore.”

That same father said he and his wife had to seek help themselves to mend their relationship.

Matlak must serve a minimum of 85 percent of that 40-year sentence, meaning he will be nearly 80 years old by the time he is eligible for parole. After his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
