California Governor Gavin Newsom has withdrawn his children from their summer camps after photos of his 10-year-old son appeared indoors without a face mask — in violation of the state’s coronavirus rules.
Newsom ruled on July 9 that children in California are still required to wear face masks at school and summer camps, despite the CDC changing its rules to say face masks are no longer necessary.
On Monday, photos emerged of his son Hunter, 10, at a Sacramento basketball camp with others, indoors, without a mask.
Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel, actress and director, have four children: daughter Montana, 11; son Hunter, 10; daughter Brooklynn, eight; and a five-year-old son, Dutch.
Critics of Newsom, who faces a recall election in September partly due to anger over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, seized on the photos as further evidence of his hypocrisy.
Newsom was caught in November at a large birthday dinner at the exclusive restaurant The French Laundry in Napa Valley, in violation of COVID rules.
California governor Gavin Newsom declined to lift the mask mandate in schools and camps earlier this month, despite the CDC updating its own guidelines. His son Hunter, ten, was photographed at camp this week without a face mask, and Newsom then took his children out of the camp

“The Newsoms were concerned to see unvaccinated children exposed inside a camp their children attended yesterday,” Newsom communications director Erin Mellon said in a statement Tuesday.
“Their children don’t go to camp anymore.”
Mellon said Montana and Hunter had been in the camp.

The Newsoms said they didn’t read the email properly.
“The family reviewed communications from the camp and realized that an email had been missed stating that the camp would not enforce masking escorts,” Mellon said.
After being caught apparently breaking his own rules at his French Laundry dinner last fall, Newsom apologized and promised to set a better example.
“I want to apologize because I have to preach and practice, not just preach and not practice, and I tried my best to do that,” Newsom said at the time.
‘We are all human. We all fall short sometimes.’
Reopen California Schools, a group that recently filed a lawsuit against the governor over the update requiring students to wear face masks in class, first reported on the maskless camp photo.
“This is a clear violation of his own mask mandates. Why can his child be maskless, but not ours?’ the group said on Twitter.
