The saddest dog at a local adoption center in California finally found a home after a Sacramento couple objected to the staff's recommendation to look for a friendlier dog.
Jessica Williams and her boyfriend Jared had recently moved to an apartment that allowed dogs. Even though Jared was open to the idea, he asked if he could wait until his birthday in November.
But Jessica started looking for her future pet, and a stray dog in a Los Angeles shelter won her heart.
"He would growl and hit people when they passed," Williams told The Dodo. "I had never seen a sadder dog and I knew we could not leave it there."
The shelter staff told the couple in Sacramento, California, that the dog they wanted to adopt would not be too "cute". They presented other hairy options that were quickly rejected
Jessica Williams and her boyfriend Jared from Sacramento, California, took a six-hour trip to adopt Benji (pictured after adoption) from a local public shelter in Los Angeles, who told them the dog was not "friendly" .
Jessica and Jared made the six-hour trip from northern California, but workers continually insisted they adopt another pet.
"The shelter also told us it was not friendly," Jessica said, adding that the shelter staff said "it would not be a dog that would approach us to be tender."
Benji, who had been at the shelter for 10 days, was not very fond of strangers.
A flea allergy caused him to lose much of his coat and the shelter staff was not very open to the idea of allowing the three to spend time together.
The dog-loving couple thought otherwise and signed the required adoption documents, which made Benji an official member of his family against the shelter council.

Benji was not very comfortable at first with Jessica Williams and Jared, his new owners, but now he gets excited once he gets into his car.
While Benji struggled at first to warm up their new owners, the couple began to notice some mood swings.
Her new pet got used to her new home after living on the streets, and now she enjoys trips to restaurants, hanging out with Jessica and Jared in the yard and playing with her toys.
Uncomfortable at first in the family car, now he hurries to bark with excitement as soon as the car engine starts running.
"He loves to come and lick our faces," Jessica said. "He's so stupid now!"
