“There’s a cure”: California biotech company claims to have discovered an antibody that can block ‘100%’ of coronavirus infections
- Sorrento Therapeutics of California is going to announce that it has discovered an antibody that can completely block the coronavirus
- Scientists at the company call it a “ cure, ” saying the antibody can be used for treatment months before a vaccine is available.
- Up to 200,000 doses can be made per month, while Sorrento is awaiting FDA approval for the drug

Scientists at a California biotech company have found an antibody that completely blocks the coronavirus in a discovery they called “ cure. ” Fox news reported.
San Diego-based Sorrento Therapeutics claims that the STI-1499 antibody prevented the coronavirus from entering 100 percent of healthy human cells into petri dishes.
It is one of many antibodies scheduled to be combined for a drug cocktail that Sorrento is developing in partnership with Mt Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
In a press release, Sorrento said it could produce up to 200,000 doses of the antibody per month – a production timeline that would likely make the drug available months earlier than a COVID-19 vaccine is expected.
The company has applied for urgent approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but has not yet received the green light.
After the announcement, shares for Sorrento rose by nearly 220 percent.
Scientists from a biotech company in California say they have discovered an antibody that can ‘100%’ prevent the coronavirus from entering human cells – claiming it is a ‘cure’
“We want to emphasize that there is a cure,” said the CEO of Sorrento, Dr. Henry Ji, to Fox.
“There is a solution that works 100 percent.
“If we have the neutralizing antibody in your body, you don’t need social distance. You can open a society without fear. ‘
It is coming the same day that the Trump administration’s guidelines to slow down its spread expire, and as many states are starting to reopen despite expert warnings that easing restrictions can cause a devastating second wave of infection.
Sorrento’s drug, called STI-1499, is one of a dozen antibodies – immune cells that neutralize pathogens like coronavirus – that the company found had some effect on the coronavirus.
A cocktail of antibodies can act as a ‘protective shield’ for human cells, preventing the virus causing COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, from entering them.
It blocks the virus from its primary doorway, a receptor on the surface of human cells called the ACE2 receptor.
“This is wrapping his arms around the virus. It wraps around the virus and removes it from the body, “said Dr. Ji Fox about what his company has seen in laboratory experiments.
“If the antibody prevents a virus from entering a human cell, the virus cannot survive.
“If they can’t get into the cell, they can’t replicate. So it means that if we prevent the virus from getting into the cell, the virus will eventually die. The body cleans up that virus. ‘
