Kerr has been charged with intentionally causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress to the male PC under section 31(1)(b) of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

If convicted next year, the Australia captain faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Kerr was summoned by postal requisition to appear for the first time at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on February 1. The case was then referred to Kingston Crown Court.

He was wearing a white T-shirt under a black suit jacket when he appeared via video link, speaking only to confirm his identity and plead not guilty to the charge.

Kerr was told she was required to attend a four-day trial, scheduled for next February, during which two police officers are expected to testify.

A hearing is scheduled for April 26 at which his defense is expected to try to dismiss the case, alleging abuse of process.

Judge Judith Elaine Coello said she understood Kerr’s defense would be that he did not intend to cause alarm, harassment or distress to the police officer and that his insult was not racially motivated.

According to The Sun, the delay in charging her was due to CPS lawyers deliberating over what offense to prosecute her for.

Chelsea coach Emma Hayes will speak to the press for the first time since the Kerr news broke today, while Australia manager Tony Gustavsson revealed on Tuesday that he was unaware of the alleged incident involving his captain.

“I was informed this morning and obviously I was surprised and had some time to speak to the federation (Football Australia) about it.

‘And as you know, the federation has issued a statement. Because it is a legal process, I need to refer to that statement.

‘Unfortunately I cannot comment more than that.

“But I can make it very clear that today was the first time I heard about it.”

Gustavsson was asked about Kerr’s character and whether the alleged crime was in line with his personality.
