A surfer has tragically died after being pulled up by the surf at a popular tourist beach.

Emergency services were called to Main Beach at Byron Bay, on NSW’s far north coast, about 9.30am on Monday to reports of a man unconscious in the surf.

The 59-year-old man was pulled to shore where Surf Lifesavers and paramedics treated the man.

He was then taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition, where he has since died.
