Within a few weeks, BVB lost or at least worsened its chances of winning the title in three competitions. A Dortmund star has now revealed just how great the frustration within the team was afterwards.
First the end of the Champions League against Chelsea, then the loss of the hard-fought Bundesliga lead through a swatter at direct competitor FC Bayern and shortly afterwards the fully deserved DFB Cup defeat in Leipzig – no question, Borussia Dortmund has difficult weeks behind.
Even if the championship is still in there, BVB is still very annoyed about the carelessly lost chances of winning trophies.
“Of course we wanted to make the games against Bayern and Leipzig more successful and we had a lot planned against Bayern. We finally wanted to hold our own and survive. Unfortunately it didn’t work. We didn’t reach our performance limit,” summarized reserve keeper Alexander Meyer the past few weeks in conversation with the “Lübecker Nachrichten”.
The 32-year-old, who moved from Regensburg to the Ruhr area as a backup for regular goalkeeper Gregor Kobel last summer, admitted: “The two games hurt us a lot.”
BVB chance for the championship “something very special”
At the same time, Meyer, who played twelve competitive games for the Black and Yellows in 2022/2023, emphasized that he did not want to bury his head in the sand just yet.
“After the very disappointing elimination in the Champions League, we focused on the cup and the championship. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out in the cup either, so the focus is now completely on the championship. And let’s be honest: seven matchdays ahead Playing for the championship at the end of the season is something very special,” emphasized the veteran.
