The yellow school bus had been hired to take a church choir to a wedding ceremony on Saturday when it encountered a flooded road with fast-flowing water.

But with people waiting on the other side of the river to guide the bus across, the vehicle decided to take its risk and started moving slowly over the murky water.

However, the incident quickly took a turn for the worse when, about three quarters of the way across the road, the entire bus overturned on its side and began to sink rapidly.

Within seconds, most of the bus was submerged. Both passengers and bystanders could be heard screaming for help, and people rushed to try to get people out.

Ten passengers were rescued from the bus, but more than 20 were killed.

Rescue divers later retrieved 23 bodies from the water.

Charity Ngilu, governor of Kitui County, where the incident took place, said: “We had this terrible, terrible accident that happened here on Saturday morning.

“The bodies collected so far are over 23. We have more bodies on the bus.”

Vice President William Ruto was among those who expressed his condolences, and also urged motorists to be extra careful on the roads as many parts of Kenya are experiencing torrential rain.
