Bunnings chemical spill nightmare: Woman has difficulty breathing as Hazmat crew rush to shop

  • Fire and security teams rushed to the Bunnings Thursday night

A woman is treated for breathing problems after a chemical spill at a Bunnings store in Sydney.

Firefighters and a hazardous materials crew rushed to the store in Balgowlah in the north of the city early Thursday evening after reports leaked of a truck carrying a load of chemicals.

It is understood the spill, which occurred at about 6pm, has been contained, but a trailer loaded with pallets of chemicals including acids, chlorine and aerosols must be unloaded before it can be cleaned.

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry told Daily Mail Australia that the back of the truck carrying the hazardous chemicals was leaking.

“Eight fire trucks with a hazmat team are on scene to unload the truck to determine the extent of the leak,” he said.

“They’ll find the leaking barrel and take it to safety.”

He said the spill is believed to be sodium hydrochloride – otherwise known as swimming pool chlorine.

He also confirmed that a woman was treated at the scene for breathing difficulties and has been taken to hospital.

Bunnings has been contacted for comment.
