Bunbury Airport, Western Australia: Pilot dies after his small plane crashes near airport

A man died days after a horrific small plane crash that left him trapped on the plane for almost half an hour.

Emergency crews were called after it was reported that a privately owned plane had crashed near Bunbury Airport, 170 kilometers south of Perth, about 2.45pm on Friday.

WA Police confirmed the plane had crashed at the end of the runway on the east side of the South West Highway.

It is understood the pilot, 63, was trapped in the plane after the crash but was extricated at around 3.10pm.

Firefighters were forced to work for more than half an hour to remove him from the plane.

He suffered serious injuries in the accident, including a broken pelvis and several facial injuries.

He was then assessed at the scene by paramedics from St John Ambulance before being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said Tuesday that the man had died as a result of his injuries.

The ATSB has been informed of the accident and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
