BUMBLE ON THE TEST: Stokes and McCullum have got England entertaining the fans
BUMBLE ON THE TEST: Rob Key has got his appointments right with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum and is making sure the team is once again entertaining the crowd…it was the perfect start to England’s new testing era!
- England completed a 3-0 series against New Zealand on Monday
- Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root drove England to victory
- England have excelled under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum in recent weeks
- This proves that director Rob Key had the right conversations to appoint them
England chased 296 to take a 3-0 series win against New Zealand at Headingley on Monday.
Jonny Bairstow hit 71 from 44 balls, while Joe Root went undefeated at 86 to win the England Player of the Series Award.
Sportsmails David Lloyd looks back on another Test win for England and reflects on the latest news on Eoin Morgan’s future…
Jonny Bairstow beat to death an undefeated half-century on Monday to lead England to victory
Joe Root also hit an unbeaten 86 as England rode to another Test win
KEY HAS THE BIG CALLS GOOD
So far very good for the new regime. Rob Key has made some fantastic deals and he has a few more to come, including the national voter, which he will be brooding over.
England have been in the Doldrums for so long but now there is a real spring in everyone’s step, epitomized by Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root on Monday, and it’s because of this dynamic cricket brand they play. I love it.
Rob Key’s appointment of Brendon McCullum already looks like an inspired move
STOKES AND MCCULLUM HAVE BELIEVED THE PLAYERS
Remember, Key could have chosen a Steady Eddie as a coach. Someone who is very careful and says to the players, ‘Don’t lose your wickets, make it hard for them to get you out.’ Not a little.
Instead, he, Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have said, “Go out and entertain the crowd, that’s what you’re here to do.”
Sometimes they will come loose, but I have a huge confidence now. It’s a short career – and they make the most of it.
MORGAN WILL BE A DIFFICULT ACT TO FOLLOW
Eoin Morgan grabbed the English white balls by the scruff and gave them an absolute jolt, just like Bob, Ben and Brendon do!
It’s pretty clear how anyone who gets on Morgan’s teams should play. There is no one in the world who does not know that Morgan is leading that team and when he announces his retirement on Tuesday it will be difficult to follow him. A great leader and damn good guy….
Eoin Morgan led England to World Cup glory in 2019 and will be hard to replace
OFFERS WILL FLY IN FOR MORGAN
Obviously Eoin will make them want more, but I would have thought he had years left in him. He clearly has plans.
Sounds like he’ll still be playing a bit of a hundred and other stuff, but he lives to the fullest and has never had a fear of cricket.
He will be a shoo-in to someone’s comment box and I’m sure he could get a coaching or mentoring role directly if he wants one because of his position in the game. He will not be short of offers….
ENGLAND HOPEFULLY KNOW WHAT’S NECESSARY
If you are a young county player you should be screaming to get into this England lineup. They would like to have a piece of it.
And they will now know that if they want to get on the testing team, they have to go through with it. They need to up their game. It’s a good carrot, is this, for players who are careful or blockers.
I said before this revolution started that you can’t just block in Test cricket. Now that’s even more relevant….
INDIA WILL PROVIDE A STERN TEST
The tests are coming thick and fast and there’s another one in Edgbaston on Friday against India.
Remember this should have been played last season, but their players all went back to play in the IPL. So this is a one off with England trailing 2-1.
India has some great players and I wonder if Virat Kohli will lead the team again if Rohit Sharma has not recovered from Covid? It’s going to be another investigation into this new side of England…
Virat Kohli and co. will give the English Test side a rigorous test when they play in Edgbaston
CRAWLEY THE ONLY DELIVERY
The only real concern England has is Zak Crawley. He just looks everywhere. I know England will stay with him, but I wouldn’t have chosen him over Edgbaston.
What about Kumar Sangakkara’s suggestion that Jos Buttler should open up to the Test side? It’s left, but Kumar is one to listen to. He has seen what this English team stands for. I’m all for that sort of thing.
Jos is such a gifted player that it would be a shame not to be part of this….
Zak Crawley’s form is the only concern heading into the rest of this summer’s cricket
Jos Buttler could still have a part in England’s test team going forward
