Two people have died and a third is fighting for their life after a horrific crash on the Bruce Highway south of Cairns.
Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on the Bruce Highway in Fitzgerald Creek shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday.
“On arrival, two people were pronounced deceased. Another person was airlifted to Cairns Hospital,” a Queensland Police spokesman said.
Paramedics are currently assessing several patients with life-threatening injuries, but the exact number of injured is still unknown.
The Bruce Highway through Fitzgerald Creek is closed in both directions and investigations are ongoing.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area or expect long delays.
