Browns cut Odell Beckham Jr. after his dad posted video of him ripping QB Baker Mayfield

Browns star Odell Beckham Jr. gets a pink slip for his birthday after his dad posted a video to social media in which he ridiculed Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield for getting the star receiver the football.

The team negotiated the terms of Beckham’s release with its agent on Friday.

“After careful consideration, internal discussions and discussions with Odell and its representatives, we have determined that it is in the best interests of all parties involved that Odell no longer plays for the Cleveland Browns,” Browns GM Andrew Berry said in a statement.

“We appreciate all of his efforts and contributions in Cleveland, but we have just reached a point where we can best move forward as a team without Odell. We are finalizing the process of releasing Odell and wish him every success in his career.”

Beckham, who turns 29 on Friday, was kept out of a second consecutive training session on Thursday following his father’s Instagram post. The video shows Mayfield either neglecting to see Beckham open or just failing to accurately throw the ball in his direction. To emphasize the frustration of Browns fans, REM’s “Everybody Hurts” plays through the entire clip, which was created by YouTuber, JDaddy Productions.

Beckham will earn $15.8 million this season, of which the team owes him half unless claimed by another team. He has signed two more seasons, but is out of guaranteed money for his deal, making his release more agreeable for Cleveland.

His agent did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for comment.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns are renegotiating with Beckham to convert his signing bonus into base salary, which would lessen his impact on the team’s salary cap. It would also make it more likely that a team would claim Beckham from waivers, and that could wipe him off Cleveland’s books entirely.

The Browns first told Beckham that he was not allowed to report to training on Wednesday. Mayfield, who has not spoken to Beckham, said he was taken aback by the video, which was released hours before Tuesday’s NFL trading deadline.

“I’ve had conversations with his father before, man to man, face to face,” Mayfield said. “I was quite surprised by the video and the intentions and the feelings behind it. I’d be lying if I said otherwise. But pain? No thanks. I’ll be fine.’

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski also said he hadn’t heard from Beckham, who hasn’t produced as expected since coming to Cleveland in 2019 from the New York Giants.

Amid a major distraction, the Browns (4-4), who have fallen to last place in the AFC North, will visit the Cincinnati Bengals (5-3) on Sunday.

Stefanski will not speak to the media on Thursday, while Beckham sometimes talks. While he’s not there, his good friend and fellow recipient Jarvis Landry usually holds a media session on Thursdays.

Beckham’s drama-filled tenure in Cleveland has likely come to an end after a few disruptive days.

Beckham has played just two 100-yard games in 2 1/2 seasons with Cleveland. When injured last year and sidelined with a knee injury, Mayfield played at his best, the Browns ended the playoff drought and won the playoffs for the first time since 1994.

On Sunday, Mayfield threw just two passes to Beckham.

The Louisiana State product seemed unstoppable during its rookie season in 2014.

His time in New York is best remembered for scoring a one-handed touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys as he fell backwards out of the end zone. A defender was also flagged for interference with the pass at play, which was denied after officials, coaches and teammates realized he had actually caught the Eli Manning pass.

Experts have since labeled the catch the biggest in NFL history.

Although Beckham occasionally battled with coaches and the New York front office, he remained productive until his ankle problems limited him to just four games in 2017.

Despite the injuries, the Giants still believed that Beckham was valuable enough in 2018 to give him a five-year extension of $95 million with $41 million guaranteed.

But after making 12 appearances for the Giants in 2018, he was traded to Cleveland in 2019 for safety Jabrill Peppers, offensive guard Kevin Zeitler, and the first and third rounds of the Browns in the 2019 NFL Draft.

His years in Cleveland have not been nearly as productive, largely due to injuries. Most notably, Beckham’s 2020 season ended due to a torn ACL in his left knee.

He has returned to play six games for Cleveland this year, but Beckham’s 17 receptions on 34 goals are far below his own expectations.

During his career, Beckham was targeted by his quarterbacks about 9.5 times per game.

This season, however, Mayfield has only targeted him 5.6 times per game.
