Brothers, ages 3 and 11, stabbed to death in a Bronx apartment

Two young children died at a Bronx shelter after being stabbed multiple times in the neck and torso, police said Saturday, shortly after arresting the children’s “erratic, naked mother as a person of interest.”

The incident occurred in an apartment at a family shelter near Mount Hope at around 7:20 p.m., and saw a three-year-old and an 11-month-old die.

Their 24-year-old mother was taken into custody around 7:50 p.m., police said in a late-night news release, revealing that the arrest came half an hour before the bodies were discovered.

Initially, officers were dispatched to the residence after receiving a call at 7:20pm complaining that a female was acting ‘erratic’. Upon arrival, police said, they found a naked woman in the kitchen lighting objects.

Despite “acting unreasonably”, the woman was taken into custody without incident and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Minutes after officers left, the boys’ father discovered the two boys unresponsive in the apartment’s bathtub and called officers a second time around 7:55 p.m.

Before his arrival, the neighbors helped the father get the children out of the tub and tried to resuscitate them, without success. They were transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where they were pronounced dead, according to police.

The mother, who has not been named, is currently in custody as a person of interest, Patrol Borough Bronx Deputy Chief Louis De Ceglie said at 11 p.m. Saturday outside the building at 246 Echo Place.

Patrol Borough Bronx Deputy Chief Louis De Ceglie said Saturday that the unidentified mother is currently in custody as a person of interest. She was arrested after being found naked in the apartment at 246 Echo Place.

“Officers arrived and found a naked 24-year-old female inside the apartment on the third floor acting irrationally,” Chief de Ceglie told reporters outside the building.

De Ceglie said the initial report officers received warned of a “woman acting erratic, but not violent, with no weapons.”

“Officers took the woman into custody without incident and awaited an ambulance response.”

De Ceglie said the woman was 24 years old; a police statement said she was 22 years old.

It is believed that the officers did not see the bodies of the children on their first stop at the home, as they were hiding in the bathroom at the time of their response.

Sometime before the police arrived a second time, the panicked father of the children, who also has not been identified, made an impassioned plea for help upon discovering the brutalized bodies of his children.

It is believed that the officers did not see the bodies of the children on their first stop at the home, as they were hiding in the bathroom at the time of their response. Officers had initially received a complaint from an unarmed woman “acting erratically.”

That call was reportedly heard by a neighbor one floor up on the fourth floor, who helped the distraught father get the children out of the bathtub when he found them and administered CPR.

In statements to The New York Post, the neighbor, who asked not to be identified, recounted the drama that unfolded in less than 30 minutes after the arrest of the woman and the declaration of death of the children.

“I tried to give the baby some air, but it was too much,” the neighbor told the newspaper, claiming that police and other emergency officials had “passed” the children the first time. It’s sad.

Another witness shared with the outlet how, in the midst of the commotion, he heard the father frantically yelling “help me” as he carried the bloody bodies of the children down the hallway of the building.

However, efforts to resuscitate the children were ultimately unsuccessful, despite being managed by the aforementioned neighbor and an unidentified relative, police said.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, police said.

Meanwhile, the accounts of the residents of the Bronx public housing building paint a picture that suggests the murders may have been the culmination of a domestic dispute, which were not unknown to the family.

Shannon Holyfield, who lives down the hall from the family, said the boys’ parents had been fighting earlier in the day.

She said she heard the children’s father scream and also saw him carrying their bloody bodies, which had been naked.

They were dead. They were dead. There was blood everywhere, it covered them,” Holyfield said, speaking to The Post.

The neighbor described the killings as ‘horrific’ and ‘heartbreaking’.

‘They are babies. The boys did not deserve that.

Police said there was a previous call to the residence over a dispute “several years ago.”

Other neighbours, including Charlotte Albi, 47, confirmed the couple argued “once in a while” but said the mother was mostly keeping to herself. Neither provided a name for any of the family members.

“She never seemed distraught,” Albi said of the children’s mother. “We were at the park and she would put them on the swings. She never displayed any kind of behavior like that at all.

I do not know what happened. Why did it come to this? she added. We saw her the other day. If you were in danger, bring us those children.
