Brother of mother’s boyfriend of three is in her cold case from 2007 to 21 years in prison

An Idaho man was sentenced to 21 years in prison in 2007 for the murder of a mother of three who was engaged to marry his brother.

Kenneth Jones, 32, was jailed for 10 to 21 years by district judge Joel Tingey after confessing to murdering Stephanie Eldredge.

In October 2020, Jones pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, crime concealment and alteration or destruction of evidence, and opposition to felony and obstruction.

His plea deal changed the charges of second-degree murder, East Idaho News reports.

“She was taken from me, one of the things I’m entitled to — my mother,” one of Eldredge’s daughters read from her victim impact statement. “… It doesn’t matter how much time you broadcast, just know you’ve ruined the lives of so many, but most of all … you’ve ruined your own.”

Eldredge disappeared from her apartment on Holbrook Drive in Idaho Falls on August 20, 2007. The authorities feared the worst when they arrived on the scene and found Eldredge’s daughter, cell phone, car keys, purse and shoes.

“I would do anything to go back and change that day,” Jones said prior to his sentencing. ‘I’m sorry what happened. I’m sorry what happened next and I’m even more sorry for the three little girls who grew up without their mother. It was a very cowardly act to hold on to this all these years. ‘

Eldredge was living with her fiancé and her killer’s half-brother, Michael Jimenez, his mother and Jones at the time of her murder. Both Jimenez and his mother cooperated with authorities during their investigation, documents show.

“However, it became immediately apparent that Kenneth R. Jones was not truthful, and the investigation focused on Jones as a possible suspect,” police said in an affidavit.

In 2009, Jones was behind bars for an unrelated crime and reportedly told his cellmate that he murdered Eldredge by force. The cellmate – Eddie Arellano – later told investigators that Jones had violently murdered Eldredge, Local 8 News reports.

Eldredge’s decomposed body was found tied in electrical tape by investigators on April 23, 2010, buried in a shallow grave just outside Idaho Falls.

The case turned cold, however, as investigators did not believe the prison’s confession was enough to charge Jones with murder.

Jessica Marley was assigned to the case in 2014 and things started to change for the investigation. She was placed on the case full-time in November 2018 and began working with ‘Cold Justice’, a true crime TV series that helped fund the testing of evidence with newer technology.

Idaho Falls Police announced on March 23, 2019, that Jones was charged with second-degree murder in the death of the mother. Jones is currently in prison for a felony third degree arson and is currently being held in Bonneville County Jail.

During the hearing, Jones announced that he and Eldredge had an argument the day she was murdered. He said when he pushed her, Eldredge hit her head and caused her death.

Jones said that to his “great embarrassment, he” panicked “when he didn’t know what to do, which led to him hiding her body.

“This has been an open wound for 13 years without any solution and to some extent without any hope of a solution,” Tingey said. Hopefully this can lead to a conclusion, a closure of what has been an open wound for so long.
