A dog which mauled two people had a tragic past which could have provoked the attack, the RSPCA says.
The Shar-Pei Pitbull named Colicchi turned on his family in Brompton, in Adelaide’s north, last Tuesday.
The attack was allegedly triggered by an argument between the owners, a 39-year-old sister and a 42-year-old brother.
The siblings required serious medical attention after the attack, with the man thinking he was going to lose his hand and the woman requiring numerous surgeries.
The woman’s six-year-old child was also forced to hide in the bathroom while the couple fought the dog, with the siblings pouring boiling water over the dog in an attempt to escape.
Colicchie, a Shar-Pei Pitbull, reportedly lived with the family for eight years before turning on his owners.

A relative reported seeing bite marks on the doors (left), while blood was also spilled on the walls and door (right).
The dog has now been euthanized.
It has now been revealed that the dog himself was the victim of a violent attack, when he and his owner were attacked by a man wielding a knife.
Colicchi was stabbed at least 15 times, and vets had to carry out surgery to save his life, according to Carolyn Jones of the RSPCA.
“There were organs protruding from some of these stab wounds. His injuries were some of the worst our detectives have ever seen,” Ms Jones told 9News.
“I think it would not be surprising to imagine that a dog who had suffered such a traumatic attack could have its future behavior affected.”
It is believed that the screaming in the house was the reason the dog started his attack, a sign that he may have been suffering from trauma.
The 39-year-old woman who was attacked by the dog was likely on the ground when the attack began.
“She was dragged by the dog, it was horrible,” a relative told 9 News last week.
“His eyes were rolling into the back of his head and I was just screaming.”

The dog was stabbed 15 times when its owner was attacked and was recovering at home when it turned on its owners.
Eventually, the woman managed to escape and locked the dog in a bedroom.
“My daughter had to hold on to the door so he couldn’t get out,” the relative said.
“But he had his teeth ripped out of the door trying to open it.
“He’s so strong he’s lucky he didn’t open the door.”
