A young British tourist has warned travellers to be careful when passing through the Australian outback after sharing a “horror story” about her friend’s experience.

In a TikTok captioned “Public service message for anyone planning a road trip in Australia,” Ash said she had been extremely cautious about visiting a remote part of Western Australia.

Speaking directly to the camera, Ash told how a friend had stopped at a petrol station in Fitzroy Crossing, a small town in the Kimberley region, 400 kilometres east of Broome.

Ash said her friend was waiting in the car while her partner went to pay, “and a guy came up to the window and tried to get into the car.”

“We’re being super cautious and I’ve literally locked myself in the car,” Ash said in response to the story, holding her keys up to the camera.

“But we’ve reached the point where every single person we’ve spoken to has said that if you’re travelling from Broome-Derby to Darwin, if you’re stopping anywhere, you have to be very careful.”

Fitzroy Crossing is a popular stopover destination as it is one of only two towns on the busy 1,000km stretch of road between Broome and Kununurra.

Social media users said they had not encountered any problems in the region, although they were extremely cautious.

“OMG driving through Halls Creek was pretty scary,” one wrote.

“I’m so glad you didn’t have any problems, especially since you traveled completely alone!” Ash replied.

“We ended up driving about 11 hours straight from Derby to Kununurra!” he wrote.

Ash responded to another comment: “Luckily we didn’t have any problems, but it’s good to be careful.”

Earlier this year there was a major outbreak of violence in Halls Creek, a three-hour drive from Fitzroy Crossing.

Police were called to the out-of-control gathering and discovered around 40 people fighting.

WA Police say some were armed with knives, rocks, sticks, metal bars and bricks.

Officers broke up the fight after sending reinforcements from Broome, Kununurra and Fitzroy Crossing.

Liquor stores in Halls Creek have been ordered to close to help stop alcohol-fueled violence.

The troubled city has become notorious as a hotbed of crime.

In 2022, unruly teens stole cars, destroyed property and wreaked havoc on the streets of Halls Creek, leaving residents too scared to leave their homes.
