A British woman has died in Spain after she was beaten by a pit bull she took into her home.

The 67-year-old had picked up the abandoned dog from a field near Valencia.

The woman had owned the dog for only a few days before it fatally injured her in her home.

The Guardia Civil said: ‘So that the emergency services could help the woman, the prescribed firearm was used to kill the animal.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she died of her injuries.

The woman lived alone and reportedly had two daughters who also lived abroad.

The mayor of Macastre, the town where she lived, also noted that she loved animals.

“The woman welcomed him, fed him and cared for him and he was in perfect condition with her, and we don’t understand what could have triggered the attack.”

In 2002, Spain passed the Law on Possession of Potentially Dangerous Animals, which describes dangerous breeds.

The list includes the Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, and Akita Inu.
