A Brit traveling around Australia has shared his frustrations with cafe culture Down Under.

Ambar from London commented on coffee shops that close early around 14 every day, while she likes to sit in a café with a cup of coffee and a sweet treat in the late afternoon.

She said coffee shop closures are the ‘most annoying thing about Australia’ she has found in her travels so far, and her complaint sparked a heated debate among Australians.

‘Why in Australia do all coffee shops close at 2 p.m.? I’ll walk around looking for a little treat, a little pick-me-up around 3-4pm, that’s the kind of time I like to have a decaffeinated coffee or maybe a little sweet treat back at home, Ambar said in a video.

The tourist’s heated stance sparked a debate in the comments, with Australians claiming there was ‘no point’ to cafes being open after 10pm.

“Sorry, I don’t work after 2pm when I’ve been there since 5.30am,” said one employee.

‘Because they open and are busy at 6am they have to close at some point,’ wrote another, to which Ambar replied: ‘Okay? The café nearest me in London opens at half past 6 and closes at 9 p.m.

“I guess we’re just massive morning people, I’ve never thought of having a coffee after dinner,” they replied.

Others said it’s because Australians are notorious ‘morning people’ who start their days very early.

‘Because there are no customers after 2pm, it makes no sense to stay open any longer. Yeah, maybe a few people like you would come in, but that’s not enough to justify staying open another few hours,’ someone explained.

“It’s because we have a good work-life balance, that’s the difference,” said another.

However, some sided with Ambar, saying they were also bewildered that Australian cafes were closing up shop so early in the day.

‘I was shocked when I moved to Sydney 11 years ago. All retail stores close at 5pm – THE TIME PEOPLE HAVE FROM WORK AND HAVE TIME TO GO SHOPPING,’ complained one viewer.

Australia becomes a dead city after We need more life and that cafes can open later,’ commented another.
