British Open final round live updates, leaderboard: Billy Horschel leads crowded field while hunting first major at Royal Troon

Billy Horschel is closer than ever to a major championship.

Horschel survived a day of bad weather on Saturday to take the lead in Sunday’s final round at the British Open. He’ll start the day at 4 under par, giving him a one-shot advantage over the rest of the field at Royal Troon in Scotland.

This is the seventh time Horschel has shared the lead through 54 holes. He has converted three of the previous six into titles. The past six major championship winners also share the lead through 54 holes.

Although he’s in excellent position, the Claret Jug is still within reach. Horschel will start with Thriston Lawrence, who is one of six golfers within a shot of him at 3 under. Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler is 2 under, and Shane Lowry, who has been in contention all week, will start at 1 under.

Live10 updates

  • Jon Rahm: Too little, too late?

It’s been an important season to forget for Jon Rahm: a T45 in his Masters defense, a missed cut at the PGA Championship, a withdrawal from the U.S. Open. And he struggled early in the Open Championship. But on Sunday, he started his day with three consecutive birdies to get to -1, three shots off the lead. Unfortunately, he then failed to convert on either par-5, but birdied the seventh to get to -2. He’ll need to keep that hot streak going over his final holes to make any kind of attack.

  • The wind blows gusty

The flags are at attention and their poles are bent as the leaders begin their rounds.

World number one Scottie Scheffler left his approach shot on number one just short of the green but managed to make par. Shane Lowery struggled to make par from a greenside bunker.

Only two groups have not yet started playing.

  • Justin Thomas just got ejected

So you start the day just four shots off the lead. By the time you get to the second tee, you’re seven back. That’s how Justin Thomas started his round with a three-putt on the first. How was that possible?

    First: OB

    Second: Penalty

    Third: Street bunker

    Fourth: 11-yard throw

    Fifth: Green

    Sixth: Putt

    Seventh: Hole

  • Jason Day returns one

Well, after making the turn at 32, Day promptly bogeys the 10th, putting him back over par. It’s worth noting that the back nine has been tougher than the front nine all week.

  • Don’t forget Jon Rahm

Three holes, three birdies for Rahm, who is now at -1. What a start for the Spaniard.

  • Jason Day trying to publish an early issue

When Billy Horschel and Thriston Lawrence begin play in an hour, Jason Day will be just a few holes away from finishing his round. Why does it matter? Because Day just turned around in 4-under 32 for his round. He’s now on par for the tournament, just four strokes back. If he can score a few more birdies and get an early number, he could be in a surprisingly decent position if the weather wreaks havoc as the day progresses.

  • Time and Las Vegas

The rain and lashing wind that dominated and, in many cases, disrupted the third round have given way to more moderate grey skies and more manageable breezes (for now) in Scotland. There are birdies to be had (Ryan Fox is already in the clubhouse with a 4-under 67), but rain is on the way and is expected to arrive around the time the leaders begin play.

Nine players are within three shots of leader Billy Horschel. Who is the Vegas favorite to win?

That would be Xander Schauffele at +350, followed by Scottie Scheffler (+375), then Horschel at +550.

For Schauffele, it would be his second major of the season, after improving to 26-0. Scheffler is seeking his third major championship and first outside of Augusta. And Horschel is still seeking the No. 1 major title.
