Britain’s dream home is a detached house on the seafront… near a Tesco

The nation’s dream home has been defined, and includes the sea, a pub and living near a Tesco supermarket.

Research by Rightmove found that after putting together all the most popular elements, a British buyer’s dream home is a four bedroom detached house in a coastal village with two living rooms, two bathrooms, a garden and a utility room.

It now also includes an office, which has become a priority for many employees during the pandemic.

And the supermarket most people want close by is Tesco, who simply send the usual preferred location indicator Waitrose to the post – although supermarket preferences vary by country, according to the property’s website.

The survey asked 2,023 people who viewed a property online in August what type of home their dream home would be, where it would be and what they would like on their doorstep.

It turned out that the top four non-essential amenities sought within walking distance are a pub, a corner shop, a coffee shop and a local market.

One of the major impacts on the housing market during the pandemic is the increase in the number of people looking for a detached home, according to Rightmove.

The country dream home is in a small friendly community, but it is also detached. This means buyers can avoid having neighbors too close.

Two living rooms is the most requested request for downstairs, while a garage and a garden are also highly valued.

A utility room stands out as a must-have and considered more useful than more glamorous alternatives, such as a walk-in closet, gym or swimming pool.

Working from home is considered important, especially among the younger age groups, with the 18- to 34-year-olds saying a home office is the number one priority for an extra room.

Meanwhile, conservatories don’t seem to be a must-have unless buyers are 65 or older, and this age group also craves a bungalow above a larger home.

The youngest 18 to 24 age group would love a dining room, while a third bathroom became popular in the 25 to 44 age group.

Rightmove says the country’s dream home is in a small, friendly community, but it’s also detached

The survey found that most people would like to live in a coastal village, with first-time buyers being the only group who would rather live in a city.

And the supermarket that most people would like to live near is a Tesco. However, there are clear regional preferences, with the south favoring Waitrose and Sainsbury’s victory in Yorkshire & the Humber.

Looking at all the real estate listings on Rightmove, Tesco is the supermarket most mentioned by listing brokers, followed by Waitrose. However, Rightmove points out that Tesco has more stores across the country.

The most popular non-essential establishment that people want to have near rural areas is a pub, followed by a local corner shop, coffee shop and local market.

A local market wins first priority in London, followed by bakeries and restaurants.

Rightmove also said local greengrocers and butchers are more popular than takeaways because people know they can rely on delivery drivers to deliver it straight to their door.

Over-65s crave a bungalow above a bigger house, according to survey

Tim Bannister of Rightmove: ‘The research paints a fascinating picture of what a ‘dream house’ really means for people.

You might think that a dream home is a mansion with swimming pools and other luxuries, but the British mind practically comes through very clearly with garages, utility rooms and offices

Tim Bannister of Rightmove

‘Normally you would think that a dream house is a mansion with swimming pools and other luxuries, but the British mind comes through very clearly with garages, utility rooms and home offices the order of the day.

“Maybe it’s the thought that when you have a dream home, you want to make sure you’re going to use it all.

“Instead of choosing an outdoor pool only to realize you can only use it a few weeks a year, think of a utility room that you know you’ll use every day.

He added: ‘Earlier this year, detached houses reached more than half a million pounds nationally for the first time, helped by increased demand for more space.

“This means that many people looking to move now are likely to be looking for a smaller home, but some will have their sights set on how they can eventually realize the four-bedroom detached house with a garden.

“Others will think about what life on the coast in a cottage might be like, and for some that will mean their daily search on Rightmove will turn into picking up the keys to their new life in a few months.”
