India recorded the highest doping test failure rate among countries that tested more than 2,000 samples, with South Africa ranking second in the Testing Figures Report 2022 issued by the World Anti-Doping Agency. India tested 3,865 samples (urine and blood combined) during the recorded period, of which 125 returned adverse analytical findings. This amounts to 3.2 percent of samples, WADA said in its report released late on Wednesday.

In terms of the number of samples tested, India ranked 11th on the list, but the number of doping violations was higher than major sporting countries such as Russia (85), the US (84), Italy (73) and France (72).

South Africa reported the second highest rate of adverse findings: 2.9 percent compared to the 2033 samples tested.

Third place was taken by Kazakhstan, where 1.9 percent of the testing pool of 2,174 samples returned negative findings.

The fourth highest percentage came from Norway and the US. While the US tested 6,782 samples, Norway’s tally was 2,075.

China tested the highest number of samples – 19,228 – during the period, with a negative finding rate of 0.2 percent.

Germany tested 13,653 samples, of which 0.3 percent tested positive for banned substances.

Russia, which has been suspended by the International Olympic Committee for repeated doping violations, tested 10,186 samples with a negative analysis rate of 0.8 percent.

“WADA’s annual test figures report is the most comprehensive overview of all doping control samples…,” WADA Director General Olivier Niggli said in a statement.

“WADA is pleased to note that anti-doping testing rates continue to increase across the board and are closest to pre-pandemic (2019) levels.

“The Test Figures Report is an important tool for cooperation between anti-doping organizations,” he added.
