Britain has world's SECOND biggest Covid outbreak currently… so where else is in the worst 20?

Unprecedented protests are taking place across China in response to new Covid restrictions put in place to control the spread of the virus.

Despite measures such as local lockdowns, testing and quarantine being deemed necessary, with cases across the country currently at a record level, its daily Covid cases are not even in the top five in the world.

Cases are highest in Japan, where nearly 100,000 people test positive per day, on average. This is followed by the United Kingdom (55,274), South Korea (53,998) and France (40,168), which are unrestricted despite higher rates.

The figures, from Oxford University’s Our World in Data platform, depend solely on testing levels, meaning the actual rate is a mystery across countries.

However, there is no better way to measure the data.

China, which has been accused of undercounting cases throughout Covid, ranks seventh, recording an average of 27,620 cases per day in the week through Sunday.

However, it is recording one of the lowest daily tolls compared to its population size, with just 19 confirmed cases per million people. This puts it at 76th place.

Using this metric, cases are currently highest in Tuvalu, where 10,195 people tested positive per million in the week to November 27, followed by Brunei (1,446) and San Marino (1,242).

Despite measures such as local lockdowns, testing and months-long quarantines being deemed necessary nationwide, China’s current infection rate, relative to its population, is not even in the top 20.
