A British man is on trial for raping his 33-year-old daughter while on holiday on the Greek island of Crete.

The 62-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in court today in Heraklion, the island’s capital, where he pleaded not guilty to the crime.

He was wearing a T-shirt and shorts and was handcuffed during the 90-minute hearing.

When charged with rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence, he told the judge: ‘I could never rape my own daughter. No one could do such a thing. I’m not guilty.’

He was remanded in custody and under Greek law his trial is due within the next 18 months.

In a dramatic twist, his daughter, who also cannot be named, came to visit him at the Heraklion courthouse and was seen hugging him before appearing before a judge and prosecutor.

She has also used social media to protest his innocence, while criticizing the Greek police for their handling of the investigation.

The man was arrested on Saturday after his daughter, with whom he was on holiday, reported to police that she had been raped two days earlier in the city of Malia on a night out.

She admitted she was drunk and said she couldn’t remember anything about her attacker, except that he was wearing all-white clothes.

Cops who reviewed CCTV footage said the couple had been drinking together in a bar when the father made obscene gestures at his daughter, punched her in the face, followed her down the street and then raped her on a deserted beach.

According to the police, her father was wearing all-white clothing in the CCTV footage.

The attack took place last week in the seaside town of Malia, and the man appeared in court today in the island's capital of Heraklion.

The victim is said to be in a state of disbelief and has told police that her father was unable to carry out the attack.

Medical examiners told local newspaper Neakriti that the woman was “covered” with injuries consistent with rocks and branches found on the beach.

They added that she also had injuries related to rape and that DNA samples have been collected.

In her complaint to police, the woman alleged that an unknown man stopped and raped her in the early hours of Thursday morning in a narrow street near a bar where she had previously been drinking with her father.

Local media reported that DNA samples were collected as part of the police investigation and that the man has also been given a government-appointed lawyer so that he can defend himself when on trial.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: ‘We are providing consular support to a British woman in Greece.’
