An angry homeowner’s complaint about a 2.5 meter fence built by her neighbor backfired after Australians said she should be “grateful”.
The Brisbane resident took to Reddit on Thursday asking for urgent advice.
‘Our neighbor has removed our shared fence, without communicating or notifying us. “Then they are building a new 2.5 meter fence, which prevents light from entering our house,” the fed-up owner wrote.
‘The neighbor has cited that they are doing this to ensure their dogs are contained, however they have not replaced the shorter fences in their yard and only built a ‘barricade’ type fence along part of our fence.
‘Brisbane City Council has advised that they cannot do anything as the neighbor will only have to certify the fence to comply.
“The State of Queensland has advised that we can take them to QCAT (the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal), although this may take several months.”
The owner said negotiations with his neighbor were at a standstill.
‘I’ve tried to talk very politely to the neighbor but I’ve gotten nowhere. “I have asked them to stop work until we can reach a mutual agreement and we would even consider contributing to the costs,” he said.

The neighbor who built the new fence said she had been trying to organize a new fence for years.
“Over Christmas the fence was falling down and I had to get someone to help it urgently,” he said. news.com.au.
“We talked to the council, the council said go ahead and build it, worry about certification later.”
The woman said she had a strained relationship with her neighbor because of her dogs.
“The only reason for that was because his texts and letters were about the dogs, but to be honest, it’s nice not to have to search instead,” she said.
Australians were quick to criticize the homeowner, with one commenter suggesting she “count her lucky stars.”
‘They are putting up a fence that will keep you safe and you won’t have to pay. “You should be very happy,” said one.
“What surprises me most is that he didn’t ask for cash, I’m very grateful.”
Australians were quick to criticize the homeowner, with one commenter suggesting she “count her lucky stars” that the new fence had been built.
“Then his dogs came out and attacked you so the neighbor pays the full cost of a new fence to prevent this from happening against you and even puts the fence back on his side and you complain lmao,” said one second.
“Yes, take it to QCAT and they will force you to pay 50% of the costs.”
‘I’m not going to lie, the new fence looks better, offers more privacy and is free. “I’d be counting my lucky stars,” wrote a third.
‘Your fence wasn’t really cutting the fence. This is better. Take the free fence,’ a third suggested.
‘Why would you be against this? The fence looks great and provides even more privacy and you don’t even have to pay anything!’ said a fourth.
However, others were more sympathetic to the owner.
‘OP’s main complaint is the lack of light in her house right now. A valid complaint that many people here overlook,” one wrote.
In response to the comments, the owner said he would “gladly foot the bill” to replace the fence with a “waist-high fence to give us great natural light.”
