The 2032 Olympics may still be almost a decade away, but Brisbane has already been named Australia’s top sporting city, according to a new survey.
The Queensland capital is the only Australian city to make the top 100 in BCW’s annual Sports Cities Rankings, coming in at 15th just behind Chicago and Munich.
A fresh entry in the rankings, Brisbane is the only Australian city to make the top 100, with sports-mad Melbourne and Sydney falling just outside.
Paris tops the rankings ahead of Los Angeles and London, with New York and Manchester in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Madrid and Barcelona follow suit ahead of Tokyo, which fell from first place last year to eighth in the current ranking, with Lausanne and Budapest completing the top-10.

The report noted that “aligning with big brands like the Olympic Games and FIFA and major professional leagues” was critical for cities to be perceived internationally as leading sports hubs.
In that sense, it was no surprise to see Paris and Los Angeles, host of the next two Summer Olympics, topping the list, ahead of London, host of the 2012 Olympics.
And BCW attributed Brisbane’s ‘impressive debut’ to River City winning the rights to host the 2032 Olympics.
“Brisbane is already well known as a leading global sports city and that reputation will only improve as we get closer to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.
“We have world-class stadiums close to the city, vibrant venues, year-round sunshine and excellent public transport, all of which help make Brisbane an ideal destination for fans to experience major sporting events.”
In February, the federal government approved $7 billion in funding for new and upgraded stadiums, including the new $2.5 billion Brisbane Arena.
The venue, to be built near the cross-river rail on the city’s Roma street, will house a swimming pool for the 2032 Olympics and will later become a music venue.
“This will cement this great city as a global city, as a world power, but it will not only benefit Brisbane,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in unveiling the funding.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has revealed plans to tear down and rebuild The Gabba at a cost of $2.7 billion.
“This will make a huge difference to our economy, to our way of life, to how Australia is perceived, too, in the world.”
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has also revealed plans to tear down and rebuild The Gabba at a cost of $2.7 billion, which will “anchor a major urban renewal project.”
The International Olympic Committee requires a 50,000 capacity stadium of a different shape than the Gabba in its current state. Funding for the redevelopment of the stadium will not come from the federal government.
Brisbane will also host the Women’s World Cup later this month and the Rugby World Cup in 2027.

Queensland’s largest city has hosted the NRL’s Magic Round since its introduction in 2019, with the annual extravaganza attracting over 540,000 fans since its inception.
This year, a record 147,105 fans attended the eight games at Suncorp Stadium for an average crowd of just over 49,000.
TO news corporation Last month’s report revealed that the event brings approximately $28 million each year to the Sunshine State’s economy.
And the Queensland government is reportedly set to submit a $20 million offer to the NRL to ensure Brisbane remains the host of the Magic Round for the next decade.
