  • Old Trafford is not the only Premier League stadium with a leaky roof

Manchester United’s defence wasn’t the only thing that went wrong at the Amex Stadium today.

During Brighton’s 2-1 win over the Red Devils, water was seen gushing from the roof of the home team’s stadium and making its way into the stands.

Although Erik ten Hags’ men will leave disappointed with the result, conceding a late 95th minute goal and having a goal disallowed thanks to a bizarre offside decision, they will be happy to know that their stadium is not the only leaky roof in the Premier League.

Manchester United came under fire last season for the state of Old Trafford and for considering leaky roofs unacceptable in the Premier League.

But today in Sussex, Brighton showed that even the newest stadiums can leak during heavy rain.

TNT Sports match commentator Darren Fletcher noticed water gushing from the roof and was recorded saying “it’s not just Old Trafford, they’re everywhere”.

Co-commentator Ally McCoist said: “What kind of weather are we having? What are they serving us here?”

The Amex opened in 2011, replacing the temporary Withdean Athletics Stadium as Brighton’s home stadium.

The stadium has been a Premier League fixture for years since the Seagulls gained promotion to England’s top flight in 2017.

Despite the hole in the roof, Brighton were not deterred as the Seagulls, thanks to a 95th-minute header from João Pedro, continued the perfect start to the new season for Fabian Hürzeler’s side.

However, the leak did not affect the Seagulls' day, who won 2-1 against the Red Devils.

Fletcher and McCoist were not the only ones to react to Brighton’s leaky stadium; many fans took to social media to mock the Seagulls, and the Red Devils were not left out of the running jokes.

One user ‘X’ wrote: ‘It’s very kind of Brighton to make Manchester United fans feel at home.’

Before a second, presumably a United fan, commented: “Sorry, our source is better…”

And a third adds: “Someone will have to move and sit on the stairs.”
