Bridgerton writer says writing steamy sex scenes was ‘one of the most awkward moments of my career’

One of the lead writers of Netflix’s upcoming season of Bridgerton has called working on the sex scenes for the show “one of the most awkward moments of my career.”

The Regency romp, which is based on a series of books of the same name by Julia Quinn, follows one of eight Bridgerton children in each series, with season three set to hit theaters next year.

Jess Brownell, a writer-producer of the historical drama who will serve as showrunner on both series three and four, spoke with the Sunday Times about writing some of the show’s steamy scenes, describing the process as “clumsy” and admitting she didn’t want to show her boss the “detailed” concepts.

Bridgerton left fans flushed and fascinated by the raunchy of the opening season – and according to a new interview in The Sunday Times, the writers were also blushing behind the scenes, it seems. (Pictured Sienna (Sabrina Bartlett) and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) in season one)

Jess Brownell (pictured), a Bridgerton writer-producer who will serve as showrunner in seasons three and four, revealed that writing the show’s famous sex scenes was “clunky” at first.

Season one featured the attraction between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), which sent fans into a frenzy by simply licking a spoon in a seductive way.

Meanwhile, season two showcased the relationship between Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), which starts out prickly but turns flirtatious, leading to serious sexual tension.

She said: ‘[It was] one of the most awkward moments of my career…I was having fun, but then I remembered that my boss would read them…he had asked for detailed information.”

While the first series was famous for its overtly sexual sequences — including a scene in which the Duke of Hastings seductively licked a spoon and spawned thousands of giphys — the second took a slower approach to burning.

As to why the second season took a different direction, Shonda Rhimes, head of production company Shondaland, which produced Bridgerton (as well as other hits, including Grey’s Anatomy and Inventing Anna), said that “each character’s romantic life is different.”

Shona, who has been described as a ‘super producer’ thanks to her impressive lineup of productions, added: ‘It would be weird if everyone had the same kind of sex life… What’s great about season two is that it’s about desire. .’

While some fans felt the loss of the more steamy scenes made the second part less enjoyable, many said they were delighted with the love story between Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma, and praised the chemistry between the two actors.

On top of the slow combustion, With sexually-charged tense scenes, the show’s latest season still featured some snappy segments, including one where a naked Anthony is seen covering up his modesty in his bedroom.

While the second season has less overtly provocative scenes, fans were still happy with some steamy scenes, including this one where Anthony falls into the water as a result of flirty behavior

Numerous fans praised the steamy ‘slow burn’ sexual tension in Series 2’s storyline (photo LR: Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma, Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton)

Taking to social media to praise the program after its release earlier this year, one fan wrote: ‘Yeah, Bridgerton season 2 is less steamy, but IT WORKS. I can’t even explain how electric the voltage is. Burn slowly for the win every time.’

Another added: ‘Sex isn’t always free and can be an integral part of story/character development. Bridgerton is born out of novels, so the steamy scenes are no surprise. S1 took that approach, while S2 is more about slow burn, the desire a la Jane Austen.’

And viewers have more to look forward to as season three is currently in production. While there’s no official release date yet, previous seasons have taken about a year from filming to release, which could put Bridgerton season three’s release date in the summer of 2023.

The third season will focus on another sibling of Bridgerton – Colin – but will break tradition and skip the third Julia Quinn novel and jump to the fourth, Romancing Mister Bridgerton.

A description of his character adds: “But with wealth and a noble title to back his eccentricities, he will have no shortage of interest from young ladies this season.”

And James Phoon – who has appeared in Wreck – plays the role of Harry Dankworth in the third series.

Jess Brownell confirmed in an interview with Variety that season three moves forward to book four and focuses on the love story of Colin and Penelope.

Moving on: In Bridgerton’s highly anticipated third series, Penelope Featherington (Nicole Coughlan) will give up her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton)

A potential romance between the pair has been teased for the past two seasons, with wallflower Penelope pining for Colin from the side of the ballroom as he took center stage.

However, their storyline ended in an awkward position at the end of the last series, after Penelope learned that Colin was making fun of the idea of marrying her to his friends.

Penelope, who also has a secret identity as Lady Whistledown, instead decides it’s time for her to find a husband who “will give her enough independence to continue her double life away from her mother and sisters.” ‘.

According to a Netflix synopsis: “But due to lack of confidence, Penelope’s efforts in the marriage market fail spectacularly.

Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him for who he was, gives him the cold shoulder.

Romance: Things quickly get complicated though as Colin’s classes start to work “a little too well” and he has to decide if his feelings for Penelope are just being friendly or not

“To regain her friendship, Colin offers to guide Penelope in the way of trust to help her find a man this season.”

But things quickly get complicated when Colin’s classes start to work “a little too well,” and he has to decide whether his feelings for Penelope are just being friendly or not.

Brownell explained, “I really feel like it’s Colin and Penelope’s time. Since we’ve been watching both actors on our screens since season 1, we’ve already invested a bit in them. We know who they are as people.

“Instead of treading water on that dynamic, we wanted to push it into their season. It really felt like the perfect time to do the trick.’

She added: “I think Shonda Rhimes has publicly said before that she wants eight seasons. We hope to be able to tell the love story of every sibling and they always will be in every season.”
