Bride-to-be is furious after her mother-in-law reveals plans to wear BLACK to the wedding, despite a strict ‘neutral’ dress code – so who’s wrong?

  • The Australian bride sent invitations to her guests with a dress code
  • She asked them ‘specifically’ to wear only light, neutral colors that match the theme
  • But she got lost after her mother-in-law said she wore black

A bride-to-be has shared her frustration after discovering her mother-in-law plans to wear a black dress on her wedding day.

The Australian bride sent out invitations to her guests with a dress code, asking them to wear only neutral colors to match the theme of her wedding.

But she lost her words when her mother-in-law refused to follow the dress code.

My future mother-in-law chose to wear a black dress on our wedding day. I specifically said on the invite that I wanted neutral tones to match our theme,” she wrote in a Facebook group.

In response, she said, “It’s my son’s day too, I can wear whatever I want!” I have no words – I don’t know what to do.’

The bride shared her dilemma on social media, with lots of jumping to her defense.

‘I would have a huge problem. Your fiancé needs to check and correct his mother. Black is for funerals. I wouldn’t feel respected like that, but it’s his mother and he has to deal with it,” one woman wrote.

Others suggested that the bride just have her mother-in-law show up in black.

‘Let her wear it. She’s the one who looks petty when everyone is in neutral colors. Good luck, I hope you don’t live too close to her,” one wrote.

Another agreed, saying, “Ask your husband to talk to her…if she still doesn’t understand, let it be. She will be the odd one out. Enjoy your day and just ignore her.’

And one woman added: ‘I’d be more concerned if she wanted to wear white mate. Don’t worry about it. It’s your wedding day and it’s about love, not aesthetic photos of the guests in matching colors.’

Are guests allowed to dress in black at a wedding?

Some even accused her of being a “bridezilla” for enacting a strict dress code.

‘Typical bridezilla, you can’t tell your guests what to wear. I can understand if she wore white, but seriously, come on? Get a life, it’s your day, but you have no right to force people to wear what you want. You’re crazy,” someone wrote.

Meanwhile, many urged the bride to choose “your battle” as she should not be misled with her mother-in-law.

‘Two things. This is not the hill you want to die on. And if you don’t learn to ignore her shenanigans now, it’s going to be a long, difficult relationship to sustain for years to come,” one suggested.

Another said: ‘Let her wear black, she may not be comfortable in lighter shades. Pick your battles, it will make for a much more enjoyable day.

While one added: ‘Focus on you and choose your battle… The man you love is the boy she raised and she might feel like she’s losing him, so try to be nice. ‘
