A mother fell out with her newlywed daughter after admitting her wedding was a disaster and guests turned it into a “running joke”.

The couple spent $20,000 on their wedding but didn’t feed guests, provide drinks or hire entertainment and even had an inedible fake cake that left attendees hungry, bored and “angry.”

A year later, the bride turned to her mother when she heard that her sister and other attendees had spoken badly about the wedding and received an honest opinion.

The mother said that while the bride enjoyed the wedding, it was not a very good experience for the guests, prompting her daughter to call her “cruel” and “imbecile.”

Hundreds of people took the mother’s side and were surprised because the newlyweds did not attend to their guests.

‘Am I an asshole for being honest and telling my daughter that her wedding is a joke about what not to do if she gets married into our family/friend group?’ she asked on Reddit.

‘My daughter got married about a year ago. She spent about $20,000 on her wedding, it was a wonderful experience for her but for all the guests it really sucked. All the money went towards things the couple would enjoy.

The mother said the couple spent most of the money on the bride’s $6,000 dress, the venue and a photographer and that she was not involved in any of the planning because she had medical problems.

‘Guests had to buy food, drinks and no entertainment. “So people come to the wedding and have the ceremony, then they are taken to another room after a long day of driving, they don’t get food or drink,” he explained.

‘Most of them were forced to buy expensive food because they were starving. They didn’t even get cake because it was fake. Overall, it was not a good experience for guests.’

The bride’s mother said that people began to complain and criticize the wedding long afterward.

The bride's mother said guests joked about her daughter's wedding disaster a year later.

‘My other daughter is getting married and she asked me for help. “Her sister offered to help and my other daughter made it clear that she doesn’t want her wedding to be anything like hers,” he said.

‘My daughter asked me what I meant by that and I was honest with her. That her wedding was not a good experience for the guests and that it is a running joke among family and friends at this point.

The woman did not take the honesty well and argued with her mother.

However, many agreed with the mother and said that the bride should have considered her guests more when planning her wedding.

‘Make guests pay for their food? No entertainment? WAS THE CAKE A LIE?’ said one user.

‘Yes, if I were a guest, I would be angry too! In reality, it would be a story I would probably tell for the rest of my life. That is a bad wedding of the highest order,” wrote a second.

‘Some people are so focused on themselves that they can’t or won’t see the situation through other people’s eyes. “Her daughter and her husband talk like that because it should have been obvious to them that they were creating a very bad experience for their guests,” a third agreed.

You were being honest. It’s been a year, it’s okay. She asked and you answered. Maybe she could have left out that it was a running joke. But how the hell does someone spend $20,000 and have no food? Another intervened.

“If I showed up to a wedding and it was food and cash bar, I’d walk out,” someone added.

However, some people thought the mother should have been nicer.

There are honest things and other brutally honest things. You should have said it more kindly, leaving out the ‘everyone thought it was a joke’ thing. That was cruel,’ one woman said.

You didn’t need to tell him that his wedding was a running joke among friends and family. “It sounds like you wanted to tell him to his face that you didn’t approve of his wedding, there are definitely much nicer ways to tell him,” another responded.
