Bride drops dead from heart attack at wedding in India – so SISTER marries groom instead after families made ‘tough decision’ to continue festivities
- Bride Surbhi suffered a fatal heart attack during the ceremony in Uttar Pradesh
- A doctor was called to the scene, but could not save the woman vrouw
- The families agreed to continue the ceremony by replacing the bride with her sister
A bride collapsed and died at her own wedding in India – only for her sister to then marry the groom in the same ceremony as the family decided to carry on with the festivities.
The bride, named Surbhi, suffered a heart attack during the ceremony in the city of Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, after exchanging flower garlands with husband-to-be Manjesh Kumar as part of the Hindu wedding tradition.
A doctor from the local village was called to the scene but was unable to save her.
But rather than call off the proceedings, the families of both parties agreed to continue with the wedding ceremony by replacing the bride with her sister, Nisha. Surbhi’s body was kept in a separate room while the festivities took place and she was later cremated.
One of Surbhi’s uncles, Ajab Singh, told MailOnline it was a “difficult decision” for the family to go ahead with the wedding.

Surbhi’s brother Saurabh added: “It’s hard to believe that there was a corpse in the other room – and a bride was being prepared in the next room.”
“We didn’t know what to do in the situation,” he told IANS news agency in separate responses.
“Both families were together and someone suggested that my younger sister Nisha marry the groom. The families discussed the matter and both agreed.’
The heartbroken mother of the late bride Guddi Devi is being cared for by her son Gaurav after the incident.
“Mom is in a lot of pain. She calls out for her day after day, for she was the eldest daughter. She had dreamed of doing miracles in her life. May she rest in peace,” Gaurav told MailOnline.

One of Surbhi’s uncles, Ajab Singh, said: ‘It was a tough job for our family.
‘A daughter lay dead in one room and another daughter’s wedding was being celebrated in the other.
‘We have never experienced such mixed feelings. The grief of her death and the happiness of the wedding has yet to sink in,’
