Brentford successfully appealed Christian Norgaard’s red card against Everton after the FA confirmed the VAR was wrong to recommend a dismissal.

Norgaard received his marching orders in the first half at Goodison Park after stretching for the ball inside the Everton area and colliding with Jordan Pickford.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially called no foul, but video assistant referee Matt Donohue quickly recommended an on-field review and red card.

After the match, Bees manager Thomas Frank, who was shown a yellow card for protesting against the decision, confirmed that the club would lodge an appeal.

“For me it’s not a red card,” he said.

Frank then added: “The referee has been asked to make on-field decisions, which in my opinion was a good on-field decision, but it was overturned by VAR.”

“If the VAR is told that studs on the leg are a red card, then we need to be told that and that has to be consistent in the future, very, very consistent in the future.”

‘If it is not the law or the rule, then Chris (Kavangh) was not brave enough to reverse the situation. Also, there were several Everton players saying: “That’s not a red card.” We will most likely appeal this.

‘We need to find out if that is the law in the future and if it is not then the (disciplinary commission) will have to revoke it.

“If they don’t cancel it, they have also changed.”

The FA announced the appeal was successful this morning, leaving Norgaard available for selection for the visit of Leicester City on Saturday.

“Christian Norgaard will be available for Brentford’s next three matches following a successful claim for unfair dismissal,” the FA statement read.

“The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Everton on Saturday 23 November.”
