Brazilian gang left note with bodies of murdered couple in bar in Paraguay

A man wanted by authorities in Paraguay for theft was executed along with his girlfriend by a Brazilian gang.

Luis Martínez, 21, was on the phone on Anabel Centurión’s 22nd birthday when gunmen broke into La Choperia bar Monday night in the Paraguayan border town of Pedro Juan Caballero, opposite Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

The attackers attacked Martínez and Centurión, who were trying to save her friend from the gunfire, Amambay police chief Hugo Díaz told Radio Uno 650 AM.

Martínez was shot at least 36 times and pronounced dead at the scene. Centurión died after arriving at a hospital nearby. At least two other people sitting at a table next to the nine-year-old’s birthday dinner were shot dead. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The gang allegedly left a note with the bodies that read: “Please don’t steal.”

Luis Martínez was celebrating Anabel Centurión’s 22nd birthday in Pedro Juan Caballero, Paraguay on Monday night, when at least three gunmen walked into a bar and opened fire, killing the couple. Police say Centurión hugged 21-year-old Martínez when the attackers opened fire. The suspects left a note that read, “Please don’t post ATT: Justiceiros da Fronteira.” The gang (Justices of the Border) happens to be based in Brazil. It is not known whether Martínez was directly linked to the criminal group

‘[Martínez] joined his friend Anabel, her sister and other relatives…” said Díaz. “At the time of the shooting, Anabel hugs her partner and is shot, ending her life.”

The attackers left a handwritten note attributed to a gang known as the ‘Justiceiros da Fronteira’ [Justices of the Border] who happens to be based out of Brazil.

It is not known whether Martínez was directly linked to the criminal group.

However, the gang is said to have posted a photo of Luis Martínez and Anabel Centurión on a Facebook page hours before the shooting and threatened to take action. It claimed that ‘this man is stealing (phones). Let’s crack and cut his hands every day (before the robberies).

The shooting took place in the Paraguayan border town of Pedro Juan Caballero, opposite the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Díaz said investigators were checking security cameras from nearby businesses to determine the identities of the gunmen.

Police investigator Aníbal Franco told reporters the murder was committed by “two or three people traveling in a gray car.”

Díaz added that Martínez was wanted for aggravated robberies allegedly committed in 2018 and 2019.
