The 20-year-old has impressed for the Crimson Tide, averaging 18.8 points per game.
As the standout player on one of the nation’s standout teams, Miller led the SEC in scoring with 19.6 points per game (including the conference tournament) and shrank 8.3 rebounds as well.
This scoring mark—achieved while shooting 40.1 percent from depth—was the best of any freshman in the country.
The Miller Freshman of the Year award follows a string of other accolades, including being named a first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC from the AP.
The 6-foot-9 forward was also named SEC Player of the Year and Lotte Olson National Player of the Year, among other accolades.
However, Miller has also drawn attention off the court.
Miller has been linked to the fatal shooting of 23-year-old mum Jama Junai Harris – who has been indicted on ex-playmate Darius Miles on first-degree murder charges.
Miller was at the scene of the shooting and was not charged, but police said in court documents that Miles texted Miller to bring him his gun. Authorities said Miller was a cooperating witness, and did not miss any game time. He was given armed security protection during the March Madness tournament.
