Former Socceroos goalkeeper Brad Jones’ professional career came to a quiet end after the 41-year-old announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Jones, a six-cap Socceroo who also played for EPL giants Liverpool, has joined Perth Glory ahead of the 2021/22 A-League Men’s season.

But his spell in purple only lasted five games, with a serious career-ending knee injury.

Jones’ last game came on March 19 last year in a 4-1 loss to Brisbane Roar.

This game also marked the end of then-coach Richard Garcia’s tenure.

Jones, who was part of the Socceroos squad at the 2018 World Cup, won three trophies apiece in England, Holland and Saudi Arabia while playing for Liverpool, Feyenoord, Middlesbrough and Al-Nassr.

“I’m proud to have achieved almost every dream I had as a young boy,” Jones said in a statement.

“From playing in the Premier League, joining the team I supported as a kid at Liverpool, going to a World Cup, playing in the Champions League; it’s all been amazing.

“The path came with a lot of ups and downs, but if someone had told me, at eight years old, growing up in Huntingdale, that I would have the career that I did, I would have taken it in one wink.”

Jones joined Liverpool in 2010 and made his league debut against Blackburn in 2012 after goalkeeper Doni received a red card.

In a fairy tale start to his EPL career, Jones saved the ensuing penalty as Liverpool went on to a 3-2 win.

After saving the penalty, Jones pointed to the sky in tribute to his son Luca, who died of leukemia in November 2011.

Jones was released by Liverpool in 2015 and spent time in the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia before joining hometown club Perth Glory in 2021.

Glory general manager Anthony Radich congratulated Jones on his 22-year professional career.

“Brad’s football journey has been remarkable and his accomplishments speak for themselves,” said Radich.

“It’s a real shame we couldn’t see the best of him representing his hometown club, but he’s been a fantastic ambassador for Australian rules football over the years.”
