Brace yourself: Google’s Pixel 4A is finally here, probably next Monday

With a rumored price tag of $ 349, an OLED screen, Google’s great camera and a good enough processor, the upcoming Pixel 4A sounds like it will be a tough deal to beat for those who don’t need a premium phone. And it looks like the phone will finally launch on August 3.

Google officially confirmed that there will be a new Pixel phone on Monday, and while there is a small chance that it could be a different phone, last month Google itself also leaked a photo of a phone matching everything else we had heard. Now, more phone calls have leaked that seem to confirm many of the earlier rumors. Ishan Agarwal posted a picture of the phone similar to the one we’ve seen before and a clear confirmation of the phone’s specifications.

Phone plagues have been leaking for months, with specs, renders, camera samples, backgrounds, and even images of a prototype of a device doing the rounds. In April, 9to5Google had An overview of all rumors about the specifications of the Pixel 4A:

  • 5.81-inch screen (2340 x 1080 resolution)
  • Snapdragon 730
  • 64 GB or 128 GB storage
  • 6 GB RAM
  • 3,080 mAh battery
  • 12.2 megapixel rear camera
  • Same video recording options as Pixel 4 (max. 4K at 30 fps)
  • 8-megapixel front camera (perforation cutout)
  • Headphone connection
  • Rear-mounted fingerprint reader

Eagle-eyed readers will notice that Argarwal’s tweet also hints at the previously rumored 5G version of the 4A, which is expected to arrive this fall with a $ 499 price tag along with a Pixel 5.

Agarwal also tweeted that the 4A will be available in the US, UK, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Japan and Canada. His information is consistent with previously reported specifications about the camera.

Twitter user TechDroider checked the box contents for the Pixel 4A:

For those waiting for the arrival of Google’s latest budget smartphone, it has been quite a tale. Google canceled Google I / O 2020, which was set for May due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That would have been the expected time to reveal the Pixel 4A. And while it wasn’t necessarily expected, a slew of Android 11 announcements in June hadn’t mentioned the Pixel 4A either.

Last year’s Pixel 3A set the bar for phones under $ 400, especially when it came to camera performance; The Verge’s Dieter Bohn said in his review that it was the best phone in its price range, with “one of the best camera you can get on any smartphone”.

At the time of its release, Google drew attention to the camera’s photography in low light in ads comparing the Pixel 3A to Apple’s much more expensive iPhones.

But since then, Apple has released its iPhone SE 2020 for just $ 399, featuring both the best single-lens camera and the company’s best processor. The edgeThe review called the iPhone SE 2020 a good deal and a good smartphone, noting that it likely lasts longer than comparable Google models, with video capabilities that “impress its weight class”.
