A 1-year-old boy has died and three other children were hospitalized after an incident at a New York daycare Friday.
The child, whose identity is not yet known, died Friday afternoon at Divino Nino Daycare, located at 2707 Morris Avenue in Kingsbridge.
The cause of death and serious illness has not yet been identified, but one potential line of inquiry is that the children “ingested fentanyl.” sources told the New York Post.
The children reportedly ate around 1 p.m. and took a nap, but when it was time to wake up at 2:30 p.m., several were unresponsive, ABC News reported.
A two-year-old boy and a seven- to nine-month-old girl were transported to Montefiore Medical Center. A fourth child was taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital.
The other children are expected to survive, authorities announced Friday.
Firefighters and police officers responded to the scene and entered the daycare wearing breathing apparatus as they initially thought they were responding to a carbon monoxide leak.
This theory has since been dismissed as a cause, and a contamination tent was seen outside the daycare Friday afternoon.
The daycare, which serves children aged six weeks to 12 years, opened its doors only a few months ago, according to a neighbor.
