Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland scored a two-game goal by scoring twice, while fullback Thomas Meunier added two more when their side went 5-1 to Freiburg on Friday to come within striking distance of league leaders Bayern Munich.

After Dortmund’s dramatic 3-2 setback to secure the final win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Dortmund head coach Marco Rose opted for an unchanged line-up for the first time this season.

Haaland was involved in all three goals against the Eagles and the attacker looked electric in the early stages of this one, hitting a ball in front of goal to evade both Marco Reus and Jude Bellingham.

Christian Streich’s visitors had set a second record this season after Bayern Munich, but were second all the time, trailing twice before half an hour.

Fullback Meunier headed a header off the post from a corner of Julian Brandt after 14 minutes and doubled the lead in the 29th, nodding in another Brandt corner. He had only scored once in the Bundesliga since joining in 2020.

Haaland then sprang into action, rushing away from team-mate Bellingham to race into the penalty area, taking a perfectly timed through ball from the England international and tapping in Dortmund’s third goal just before half-time.

The Norwegian took his second in the 75th minute, his 55th goal in 56 Bundesliga appearances, after Ermedin Demirovic withdrew a goal for the visitors just after the hour.

Haaland now has four goals in five encounters with Freiburg, and 15 in total in this season’s Bundesliga.
