The Germans missed the injured top striker Erling Haaland and although they dominated possession, they could have used the power and finishing of the Norwegian up front.
Dortmund struck with their first real chance when 22-year-old Dutch international Malen made a quick three-pass across the pitch with a well-placed low shot in the 37th minute for what was also his first-ever Champions League goal.
Dortmund had the ball in the net twice in the second half, but both attempts were disallowed for offside.
The Germans and leader Ajax Amsterdam, 2-0 winner of Besiktas, have six points. Sporting and the Turkish club Besiktas have no points.
