Border Force reportedly made shocking discovery after scanning luggage at Brisbane airport

A Canadian woman is to appear in court after flying to Brisbane and allegedly hiding $13.4 million worth of methamphetamine in her luggage.

The 24-year-old underwent a baggage screening after arriving at Brisbane International Airport from Fiji on July 28, after travelling from Vancouver.

Australian Border Force officers allegedly found 14.4kg of methamphetamine inside towels soaked in vinegar and covered with coffee grounds.

The methamphetamine had an estimated value of $13.4 million, enough for nearly 145,000 street transactions, Australian Federal Police said Friday.

The woman was charged with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Border Force Superintendent Josh Ikin said the arrest was a warning to those looking to import drugs into Australia.

“Methamphetamine has a devastating effect on the community every day,” said Superintendent Ikin.

Australian Border Force searched a piece of luggage and found 14kg of methamphetamine

The drug is worth more than $13 million on the streets, Australian Federal Police said.

‘This result should serve as a warning to criminals that no matter where they try to import or move their drugs, the ABF and our partners will be waiting.’

Acting Detective Superintendent Steve Wiggins said there were 10,100 methamphetamine-related hospitalisations in 2021/22.

The woman is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
