A girl celebrating her birthday by boogie boarding on a Florida beach was forced to fight a shark that suddenly attacked her and started biting her hands and legs.
Peyton Shields turned 10 last weekend, but a family gathering at Crescent Beach, in Baker County, took a frightening turn shortly after the birthday boy waded into the water's bottom.
Because she had only been on the beach for an hour, Peyton, a short distance from the shore, began to struggle and cry out in pain to help her parents.
Peyton's father, Steve Shields, said he immediately saw his daughter in discomfort and suspected that she had been stung by a jellyfish.

Her parents initially thought she was stung by a jellyfish until she emerged from the water with a series of bite marks
Only when he saw a red mist in the water around Peyton did he realize that something much worse was happening.
& # 39; I saw that she had blood out of her hand and then I went inside, & # 39; What is going on? & # 39; Steve told WJXT. & # 39; When she got out, I saw that there was a lot more blood coming from the lower half. & # 39;
As a troubled Peyton stumbled over to her parents, she told of her terrifying encounter with a shark that suddenly attacked her.
The creature began to bite with both legs and as she tried to push it away, the shark took an extra piece from her left hand before she swam away.
Peyton's parents pressed on her wounds until paramedics arrived. Other children were in the water at the time of the attack, but she was the only one who had been damaged.
The 10-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital where she received 40 stitches from doctors, along with a number of bandages.
But luckily, the brave Peyton was released just in time to attend her birthday party with friends, which ironically was the theme of the ocean, a day after the attack.

The incident happened on Crescent Beach, last Friday in Baker County
And completely unaffected by the frightening encounter, Peyton claims she can't wait to get back in the water later this summer.
& # 39; She's angry because she can't swim and get in the water and all those things. She said: & The sharks are gone. I'm ready to go back in, & Steve said. & # 39; We live in Florida. There are sharks. There are alligators. We go swimming in the lake. We're going to swim in the ocean. It is what it is. & # 39;
With her wounds to prove the incredible story, Steve says that Payton has become a bit of a celebrity in the local community.
& # 39; My daughter was bitten by a shark. I don't know anyone who has been bitten by a shark, & he added. & # 39; Lucky Peyton. & # 39;
This is the second shark attack that will take place this year in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
