An Australian university has been accused of gender discrimination for implementing an alcohol ban that applies only to male students.
The alcohol ban affects five male-only halls in student housing at Bond University in Queensland.
The university claims it imposed the ban because of frequent wild parties that required “excessive cleaning” of accommodation.
However, male students have complained that female students are equally involved in partying but have not faced any consequences.
“They have left five children’s halls completely dry, which means we can’t drink alcohol in our hall, which has never been a problem before,” a group of students told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
‘They also fined all residents of those corridors $75 each for what they call excessive cleaning, even though nothing was cleaned.’
“Every morning after a party, I would go out and clean everything,” said one student.

Male students have responded to the ban, claiming that female students are equally guilty but have escaped punishment.
“There have been women’s runners who do exactly the same thing, but they haven’t been fined or banned from drinking.”
The students also allege that the university administration has confiscated unopened bottles of alcohol.
“Our hallway is still a mess, the bathrooms haven’t been cleaned in weeks, there’s still vomit on the floor, it’s pretty disgusting,” said one student.
A spokesperson for Bond University rejected allegations of gender discrimination.
Bond University is Australia’s first private, not-for-profit, fully independent university and was established in 1989 by controversial and prominent businessman Alan Bond.
“The university expects all students to behave responsibly and treat fellow students and property with respect,” the spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
“The temporary ban on alcohol in approximately 6 percent of campus community housing is a direct result of disruptive and antisocial behavior that has negatively impacted other students.”
The Bond University spokesperson said the ban only applied to hallways and that all students “are free to consume alcohol in one of the university’s licensed premises, in their own rooms or off campus.”
“The university will take further action if the behavior of a small minority does not improve.”
