On January 6, 2021, a mob of rioters stormed the building in an attempt to stop the process of certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election.
More than 1,250 people have pleaded guilty or been convicted following trials related to the riot, while more than 650 people received prison sentences ranging from a few days to 22 years.
About 140 officers were injured on Jan. 6, 2021, making it “probably the largest mass attack on law enforcement in a single day” in U.S. history, said Matthew Graves, the outgoing U.S. attorney in the nation’s capital.
