Boeing faces a £380m fine after pleading guilty to defrauding the US government following two fatal plane crashes.
The statement makes the planemaker a convicted felon in connection with crashes in Indonesia in 2018 and Ethiopia the following year that killed 346 people.
Their families, who wanted Boeing to face criminal prosecution and had pushed for a record fine of up to 14.6 billion pounds, called it a “sweetheart deal” that let Boeing off the hook.
Plea deal: Aircraft maker Boeing pleaded guilty to defrauding the U.S. government over two deadly plane crashes
The US aerospace giant is expected to pay only half of the fine, having already paid £190m.
This comes after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) found that Boeing had breached the terms of a 2021 agreement.
The department said the planemaker had failed to “design, implement and enforce a compliance and ethics program to prevent and detect violations of U.S. anti-fraud laws across its operations.”
A Boeing spokesman confirmed that they had reached a settlement with the Justice Department.
The guilty plea potentially threatens the company’s ability to secure lucrative government contracts with entities such as NASA.
