Police are paying close attention to a skateboard, tire tracks and a pool of blood at the scene where a body was found in Adelaide’s inner suburbs.

Emergency services were called at around 1.30am on Wednesday to a street in Welland, in the city’s inner northwest, and found a 21-year-old man unconscious on the Barrpowell St road.

South Australia Police Detective Superintendent Des Bray said the young man was murdered and police suspect the victim and attacker knew each other.

«We believe that this young man met someone on this street at half past one in the morning. Therefore, we do not believe that this death was committed by any stranger,” he said shortly before noon.

‘I’m sure that since most murders are solved in this state, I have no doubt that we will get to the bottom of this. And at the moment we have a large number of detectives and uniformed people working in Adelaide.

Detective Superintendent Bray said witnesses who heard the event provided assistance to the Western Suburbs man but were unable to revive him.

“This young man came to the street, obviously to meet someone, we can’t say how it happened or why,” he said.

“He died unnecessarily and senselessly.”

“When we get to the bottom of this, it will be for some trivial reason.”

Detective Superintendent Bray said police would probably have a clearer picture of the murder in the afternoon.

Welland is a densely populated industrial district and police are calling on security guards or anyone in the area between 1am and 2am to report to police.

“We know this guy came into the area, so he probably left from somewhere not too far from here,” he said.

A pool of blood can be seen a couple of meters from a skateboard and multiple tire marks in the cul-de-sac.
