A body has been found after a P&O cruise ship passenger fell overboard off the coast of Sydney.

New South Wales Police received reports that a person had fallen overboard from the Pacific Adventure just 10 nautical miles off Sydney Heads shortly after 4am.

A desperate search immediately began until the body of a man was discovered at 10:30 a.m.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner and launch an investigation into the death.

A man on the Pacific Adventure told 2GB radio that he and 2,600 other passengers were woken early in the morning by a “man overboard call.”

“We woke up to the man overboard call and from there it’s been like that for a couple of hours,” he said.

A driver who was supposed to pick up passengers from the Pacific Adventure explained that he was told not to hurry because “the boat stopped in front of the head and someone fell overboard.”

Previously, P&O Cruises staff were providing support to the passenger’s family.

The Pacific Adventure is returning from a three-day cruise to Queensland’s Morton Island, believed to have been Elvis-themed.
